Expect this movie to be a scorching bold drama that highlights the excesses and shortcomings of the Indian government’s policy on ‘reservations’?
Especially, with the title of the movie being ‘Aarakshan’ meaning ‘reservations’!
Deepak Kumar (played by Saif Ali Khan) gets rejected at a higher educational institute because of his social background. Not the sort of person to mince words, Deepak gives the panel his take on ‘social status’ determining admissions.
Deepak teaches at an institute renowned for its fair policy on accepting students solely on merit; Dr. Prabhakar Anand (played by Amitabh Bachchan) is the much respected Principal.
Mithilesh Singh (played by Manoj Bajpayee) another teacher at the institute takes a dig at Deepak, since a new policy on reservations has just been announced by the government.
More than a few words are exchanged between the duo; Sushanth (played by Prateik Babbar) a student at the institute joins in...
Their verbal duels are pitched straight forth, blatant and demeaning each other’s social status with regard to the excesses and shortcomings of the ‘reservation policy’.
The drama gets ‘battle fervour’ when Deepak vents his resentment at none other than his mentor Dr. Prabhakar Anand.
From then on, the movie takes a whole new direction....
Saif Ali Khan, in a never seen before role is very good.
Manoj Bajpayee and Prateik also deliver performances true to their own individual styles.
Amitabh Bachchan, as always - a standard performance in this movie where dialogues and principles rein.
Deepika Padukone paces away meticulously in a performance where she is daughter to the highly principled Dr. Prabhakar Anand, love interest to the ‘underdog’ Deepak Kumar and buddy to her classmate Sushant.
If you anticipated a high drama and a bold take on the ‘reservation policy’, don’t be surprised if you feel it’s a dampener.
Wonder what all that hue and cry about this movie is about, since ‘Aarakshan’ the movie culminates more as a Bollywood flick that highlights India’s ‘parallel education system’.
Prakash Jha’s direction is more commercial careful and less dynamic, for he borders on the controversial issue in the first part (don’t forget the mileage gained), then parts ways with the subject...
However, watch this movie for the sporadic drama and performances from the cast.
