‘RP’ is a theatre artist who characterizes the evil ‘Raavan’ on stage.
It’s hilarious for he brings home this absolute stranger, telling his live-in girlfriend that the person is his buddy.
RP (Ayushman Khurana) seriously goes out of his way to help others; a real nice guy who doesn’t know the magnitude of his niceness!
Characterizing a hopeless mutt, the sort who has nothing to look forward to - is none other than Mandar (Kunaal Roy Kapoor)... the stranger who actually ends up staying over at RP’s apartment.
The direction should be applauded for the songs and its music blend flawlessly in the background, check out the wacky song ‘Dil Ki…Toh Lag Gayi’.
Care to tap your feet? Over and above the song, keep your ears locked into the guitar strumming in this song titled ‘Mera Mann Kehne Laga’.
Here’s what makes ‘Nautanki Saala’ different, it never gives you the feeling that this is going to be a regular romantic comedy... with the way the story progresses through the mishaps and adventures of the pair, this could be your ‘mystery drama’ heavily laden with humour.
Ayushman Khurana is amazingly true to life, he goes through a range of emotions and expressions perfectly.
Kunaal Roy Kapoor matches his buddy to the point that he fatally, gives you the feeling that he might break down and fall apart any moment.
Peppered with some genuine humour, the duo of RP and Mandar takes you through several days in their lives; delighting and annoying the trio of ladies, Chitra (Gaelyn Mendonca), Nandini (Pooja Salvi)and ‘Seeta’ (Evelyn Sharma).
The visualisation of the screenplay is impeccable, beautiful visuals including wet roads that capture a shadow of colours and even some of the very vibrant colours on the sets of the stage-play that RP is a part of.
There is beautiful irony too, when RP and Mandar ‘express’ themselves subtly, live on stage what they could possibly not convey otherwise...
Since we have not been treated to this sort of comedy, i.e. a comedy with a serious script;
‘Nautanki Saala’ the movie becomes a bitter sweet romantic drama that has a fantastic share of authentic humour, its dramatic highs and even its comical lows!
A dark, delightfully different,
Nautanki Saala (Hindi film) is comic story of two friends directed by Rohan Sippy and starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Kunaal Roy Kapur , Pooja Salvi and Evelyn Sharma.
