Movie Review -
Shor ln The City
Let me know if there is another city that can match this!
A middle-aged man is seated in an auto-rickshaw in the midst of chaotic traffic; a Mercedes Benz with tinted windows is beside it; a cyclist tries to squeeze through; three young men (yes - three young men) on a motorbike meant for two scrapes past them; the local train speeds by at a distance.
Did we miss the overcrowded bus and the children selling the odd items as the traffic comes to a screeching halt at a signal?
Several strata of the society juxtaposed beside each other in frenzied traffic!
What if you add an extremely popular festival to the already existing chaos for a period of 10 days?
Shor In The City, the movie is inspired from various daily newspaper stories.
The realism is spot on as the movie revolves around three interconnected stories set during the popular Ganpati festival in Mumbai.
An Indian expatriate returns home to an unwelcoming city;
A bootlegger of bestsellers and his buddies find a bag of guns and explosives;
And a young cricketer must find the money to pay up to get into a cricket team.
Watch how naturally the expat (played by Sendhil Ramamurthy) is truly a ‘fish out of water’ in Mumbai, especially with issues that are otherwise taken for granted by the locals...
The innocence of Tilak (played by Tusshar Kapoor) and his friends are indeed classy; their simple yet probably life threatening decisions will keep you gripped on the edge of your seat!
A short sweet performance is that of Radhika Apte; don’t miss Tusshar’s expressions when he finds out something noteworthy about his spouse (played by Radhika Apte).
The simplicity and virtuousness of the film stands in sharp contrast with its splendid photography, which includes some live footage from the Ganpati procession.
There are in fact actual performances from actors shot in the midst of all the mayhem. Well done.
We may have come across stories that connect, except that directors Raj Nidimoru & Krishna DK brings together amazing story-telling, deep tension and a thought-provoking ending.
Don’t miss certain moments in the movie - where the suspense could kill you! Breathtaking suspense for several seconds - be prepared to hold your breath.
Shot on location in Mumbai, ‘Shor In The City’ is an electric, fast-paced film and a satire to beat.
Absolutely no song and dance sequence in this movie - part of a new genre of film-making from India, but the superb background music adds a daring tune to your ears!
Apart from the fine performances by Sendhil Ramamurthy and Tusshar Kapoor, the supporting cast of Nikhil Dwivedi, Pitobash Tripathi, Sundeep Kishan and Zakir Hussain also contribute to the earthy realism of the characters in the story.
‘Shor In the City’ is gritty as it captures ‘shorr’ (noise) beautifully with a difference, in this unique satirical crime drama with ingredients of a dark comedy.
Definitely watch this movie, for its engrossing and entertainingly real!
